Daniel Schell- 'L'Aile perdue' trio for tap-guitar clarinet and cello, has been created on July 6th 06 during the tap-night at the Jazz Station, Brussels. The soloist was Oli Verschueren, who played the piece on his Belgrado tuned in parallel fourths. Accompanists were Emmanuel Suys, clarinet and Angélique Charbonnel on cello. 'Tala, guitarra & compas' with Jesus Aunion (electric guitar), Sandip Banerjee (tabla), Daniel Schell (tiptar), Antonio Segura (flamenco guitar). This exciting project joins Indian music, Flamenco and new perspectives in guitar playing. Daniel was puzzled since some time by possible similarities between tala (the metric cycle of Indian music) and compàs (the metric cycle of flamenco). When he started to work with Sandip and Antonio he soon realised that there were indeed strong similarities. The other idea is to explore the possibilities of extending the flamenco technique to the tapping. Jesus was already far advanced in this way and Daniel explored it as well. The group has toured succesfully in November and further tours and CD are in preparation. ( our website, button 'Artists', link 'Tala, guitarra & compas'. ///// Karo Trio: These compositions for trio are essentialy based on a solo instrument ( flute, clarinet, violin) accompanied by the tap-guitar and percussion. The compositions are relatively simple. The music is 'chambre' style, but designed to be improvised. There is an Indian influence, in the sense that the compositions are based on modes and cycles, but they have not to be necessarily 'orientalised'. Another goal is to develop the reading. An album of these compositions will be soon available. Some of these compositions are recorded on the CD's 'Fool's gold' and 'Concert in Delhi'. 'Oratorio Ishango' is a work for quartet (Chris Joris), African percussionists and a symphonic choir. It is based on texts by African and Bengali poets. It was created in November 2002 and recorded in studio. It is now released by Lyrae/ Universal music (see main page, button 'Artists', link 'Ishango'). Baies sources is a composition for ensemble, with flute, clarinet Bb, Violin, cello, keyboards, tiptar, percussion. (see CD). the music is orchestral in essence, and symphonic in form, with a slow introduction, and then various parts with developments. 'L'enfoui fuit' for tiptar and chambre sextett, performed Live in the Botanique Brussels. This is a one hour instrumental piece, involving also music theater. The tiptar part was performed by Wolfgand Daiss. The Japanese director Kenichi Nakagawa directed the Ensemble Karo with Judith Gudor (clarinet from Hungaria), François Deppe (cello), Marie-Paule Verlinden (French Horn), Jean-Luc Plouvier (FM modulation synthesizer ), Pierre Narcisse (percussion). L'enfoui is a one hour orchestral piece which includes tiptar soloing, electro-acoustics and musical theater performed by the musicians. Stage direction was made by Daniel. More on l'" Enfoui fuit" . The score and tiptar part are available . The CD can be ordered through Clic Music. He has also built some short scale (80cm) 8-str instruments which can be tuned either in one region fourths from C0, or in two-regions. The two-regions has on one side a bass-guitar tuning from C0, and some sub-guitar tuning on the other side. The string spacing is 1 cm at the bridge, and .8 at the nut. Dave
Bowmer joining E-Tap00-07. is currently performing UK theatre shows with his
trio Restless Blue with Crossover Intergenerational Dance Company, presenting a
new dance performance called Dragon's Tale. It is about the fairground past and
present, for which they have created new music for Stick, Electronic Wind
Instrument and percussion. Dave has been recently
working
on a soundtrack by John Duggan for a short film for submission to
the Canne Film festival this year. At E-Tap 2004, Dave presented a remarkable MC on Scoring and performing for dance with choreographer Cecilia
Macfarlane. In 2004, Dave and his trio have composed and accompanied a
dance performance of the Oxford Youth Dance Company at the Oxford Playhouse. Dave
plays a purple Stick TM, with electronic effects.
At the Seminar
he has devised an interesting tuning which combines the 'best of both world'
Crafty and fourths tuning. Here are his words: 'I am taking your advice
and changing today to uncrossed on my 12 string and reverting to 4ths in
the melody in the RH on the RHS of the fretboard as seen from the player.
I will retain 5ths in the bass to be able to do my crafty work, by tuning
as follows I actually get a 7 string inverted crafty tuning in the bass
side, good for the 2 handed combined mono style, as the interval between
the 6th and 7th strings provides the minor 3rd on top of the 5ths as per
crafty, while for stereo 2 hand independant playing I get 6 melody strings
in 4ths and 6 bass in 5ths uncrossed - so quite a good solution for my
special requirements with a single instrument I think.
Strings 1>6 LH 5ths (C1 G1 D2 A3 E3 B4) then m3 to strings 7<12
RH 4ths (D4 A4 E3 B3 F#2 C#2). " Proposed name for this new and interesting
tuning: The 'best of both worlds' or 'Crafty-fourths' tuning. Dave likes

are a few words from him. Prior to owning his Stick, he went first for
the design of his own made t-g : "... design is mostly made by me, along
with craftsmen Anisimov (woods, shape, construction ) and Makhotin (nut
& tuning bridge). I needed a headless design in case to be able to
use normal guitar strings (100cm) on bass scale (860mm), cause it's quite
a mess to order whatever from outside world in Russia. It turned out in
a heavy tuning block for 12 strings (Steinberger-style) and in distance
between the strings constraint (12mm at the bridge). So the distance varies
from 8 to 12mm along the scale from nut to bridge. ...The design is neckthrough
with a two-achor maple neck, anchor tuning heads are behind the nut. Body
is mahogany. Fretboard is rosewood, flat. Two separate humbucker pickups,
two volume controls and two output jacks and a switch to make both produce
the same mono output from both pickups mixed." (Note: this t-g is presently
owned by Richard Smol from NL. ). See also Yuri Vassilevski

Portrait: variety in the tap-guitar world
The world of the tap-guitar can bring a great variety of music, but what about the instruments. At the E-tap Seminar we had a special master class devoted to listening precursors: Bunker, Chapman, Webster. We could listen the very original music of Dave Bunker. Dave developed his first touchstyle instrument as early as 1955.Watch his site http:/www.bunker-guitars.com for a view of his double-neck touch guitar. Maybe the best known precursor was the guitar player Jimmy Webster. Jimmy was not only tapping on his guitar, in 1952 he produced an innovative and interesting music. There are also musicians such as Jesus Auñion from Spain who plays great tapping music just on a straight 6-string electric guitar, or Adam Fulara from Poland on a double neck guitar. At the opposite Wolfgang Daiss brought up a giant 14 strings (two times 7 strings in fourths) tap-guitar. On his instrument, Wolfgang is able to perform impressively piano solo music of the jazzman George Shearing, but also the complicated tiptar part of Daniel Schell's new chamber work 'L'enfoui fuit'. The variety of instruments, ranging from the straight guitar, through Bunker's double-neck Duo-Lectar tm, and to Daiss's 14 strings, is just a sign of how exciting the contemporary tap-guitar world is .
A last addition to this, is maybe also the most classical of it: Oli Verschueren has recently created 'L'Aile perdue', a 20 min trio for tap-guitar, clarinet and cello, written by Schell. Well that might be probably the first 'classical' trio written for tap-guitar, in the sense of those famous trios for piano. The last E-Tap session 06 had also the honour of welcoming Ray Ashley as a student of the advanced class. But not as a tapper this time: As an accodionist. We want more of those!
That's it for now. Our next appointment will be at the Seminar 2007. Write to us, send us photos, CD's. We are very interested in hearing from you !
Best regards from Claudia Wester & Daniel Schell.
