Karo Trio

The Karo Trio, a subset of the Ensemble Karo, gives an important
place to improvisation under its various forms. The objective is to bring
the music of Daniel Schell to a larger public of "New Music" lovers.
From a composition point of view, Daniel continues to explore some
mathematical properties of harmonic tiling, which he calls "carreaux".
This is then applied to various musical forms and sources, as melodies
and material from North Indian music, melodies from the antiquity, or from
the folklore repertoire. The whole is performed under a variety of characteristic
rhythmic.
From the instrumentation point of view, the Karo Trio combines a rhythmic
base with a soloist. The rhythmic is made by Daniel who plays the tiptar,
a 12-strings sort of tap guitar tapped with the tip of the fingers and
which allows therefore hands independency. And Sandip Banerjee, a well known tabla player from Kolkotta.
The soloist is Ariane De Bievre. Ariane studied the flute at
the Conservatoire of Brussels and Mons. She then started to study the bansuri
flute with Hariprasad Chaurasia at the Rotterdam Conservatorium. The bansuri
flute is a simple piece of bamboo without any keys. Therefore all the alteration
and ornamental work has to be done by rolling the fingers on the holes
with a great accuracy.
Another form of the Karo Trio is with Fabrice de Graef on bansuri and
Carlo Strazzante on daf and tombak. Fabrice de Graef studied flute and
oboe in the Conservatoire de Valencienne (Northern France) . He then took
on bansuri and studied with Harsh Wardan, with whom he became associated.
He studies also with Hariprasad Chaurasia. Still on bansuri, he follows
the Jazz course of Daniel Beaussier at the EDIM in Paris. In 2001, he obtains
a grant from the ICCR in order to study in India with his two teachers.
Fabrice is one of the first who brings the bansuri in the jazz idiom,
mastering difficult chromatic passages present in be-pop compositions for
instance.
Carlo Strazzante, Italian born, studied classical music in Belgium,
then oriental percussion with Dahmane Khalfa and Habib Yammine. The
last years, he studied with the Iranian master percussionist Madjid Khaladj.
Festivals: The Karo Trio has played at numerous important European Festivals
as Jazz Festival "Tallers de Music" live on Radio Barcelona, at the Festival
Jazz & cetera Bruxelles and the Festival "Tapage Nocturne" live
on radio France, Paris. Recently the Karo Trio was touring India, on
invitation by the ICCR, an participated to festivals in Mumbai, Delhi, Pune,
Varanasi and Kolkata.
