Kuno Wagner presents his electronic soundscape set-up and mastery. Kuno plays a 8 str Warr, which goes to a chain of transformers and memory devices. He can store parts of his playing in several digital memories in order to create "loops" or circular rythmic patterns. All his phrases can also be transformed by various filters, saturation, phasings and other effects. Instead of straight pitch-notes, he can input gestual "movements"such as glissandi on the strings, strums and so on. As a result, the sound palette is greatly enlarged. He presents live works by his trio with Michael Strauss on electronic drumset and X on electronic MIDI saxophone.
Teed Rockwell, in both morning and afternoon
classes, explains his technique. Teed uses interesting ornaments in his
playing of folk and Indian music.
- The unisson-tremolo, an original idea of Jolliffe,
which Teed brought to a unique achievement. The same note is played in
tremolo on two adjacent strings, by alternating rapidly fingre 1 and 4.
- The bending, in the Indian 'meend' fashion.
- arpegios, using the same note on different
regions. Due to his unique tuning, Teed has strings which are almost doubled
on the Mel and Bass sides. He can achieve an open-like sound, giving a
feeling of acoustic guitar.
Daniel Schell Master class on contemporary music and harmony: How to use the tiptar in contemporary orchestral, opera and chamber music. It's place in the orchestra where it can be used as a percussion- , a bass- or a harmonic instrument. The contemporary harmony is mainly a generalisation of the traditional - and jazz - harmony. Where the classical forms use chords mainly in thirds, arranged in tonal sequences such as I IIm V7, the contemporary uses all forms of intervals in all kinds of sequences. The students are invited to write a composition for clarinet, cello and tiptar, which is then commented by the group. Indian music: a group of student sits on the ground. Each one holds the tiptar based on the ground and on his shoulder. The raaga malkauns - C Eb F Ab Bb C'- is presented in the form of a 16th century tarana, a Persian song taught to Daniel by Dhruba Ghosh, which uses onomatopoeia instead of lyrics. Various techniques are outlined such as the scales in glissandi. Each student learns to play the rhythmic cycle tintal on the tabla, the percussion instrument. After that students practice improvisation with given phrases - taana-s - accompanied by tabla.
