Lineage:

Learnt from father Sri. Parthapratim Chatterjee.    For the last few years has been receiving taalim (training) from  Ali Akbar Khan. He plays in  the  style of  Nikhil Banerjee


Career graph:

Performed in practically all major music conferences in India such as Doverlane Music Conference.  Performed in some of the most prestigious international festivals internationally such as  The Womad Festival in the UK, The North Sea Jazz Festival.  Performed in the following countries: United States, France Theatre De La Ville Paris etc.  

Teacher: Has been teaching regularly at the Summer School organised by the Asian Music Circuit in London in the Royal Academy of Music.

Purbayan has duets with Kala Ramnath (violin) and Parthosarathy (sarod). He has also collaborated with many musicians  Among them are Spanish Flamenco guitarist Eduardo Niebla, guitarist Jan Kuiper in his "World Groove Project" and with noted South African Musicians

Has been regularly performing with Indian Jazz greats like Shivamani. Louis Banks, Karl Peters, Taufiq Qureshi etc..

Style of playing:

Today Purbayan is acclaimed as one of the best young instrumentalists of India. His style of playing of which Nikhil Banerjee was the exponent is the most aesthetically satisfying combination of the best facets of "Dhrupad" and "Khayal". The depth, discipline and richness of the "Dhrupad" form is interspersed with the exuberance and lyricism of "Khayal". Purbayan is able to combine them with technical brilliance and virtuousity, accompanied of depth and serenity.
